The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
