Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
